Tamaryn & the Raveonettes - 3/31 Paradise

Tamaryn is a newish band based  out of San Francisco.  They will be inevitably be labeled shoegaze, though that isn't exactly what they are.  Their performance last night opening for the Raveonettes was certainly a memorable experience.

The best way to describe their live sound is Loveless guitars over Unknown Pleasures drums with a female singer. She doesn't have the range live that the record does, but the music is fuller live. The band seems to expand to fill the entire venue.  They could probably play an airplane hanger and still make it feel full of sound.  The lighting is fantastic.  Simple red lights with some sort of projection over Tamaryn.  The rest of the band is hidden so your eye is instantly drawn to her.

The band never looks at the crowd. Never says anything between songs, half the time Tamaryn sings with hair in her face. There is only one mic. Everyone looks vaguely disinterested. The sound is incredibly full. It is hard to describe just how big and loud there sound is.  For a band that has ties to a desert, they sound liquid like being under a blue sea.  When their set is over the band wanders off the stage, Tamaryn hanging her head as if that wasn't a great performance. Totally epic. Never said a word to the crowd but everyone loved it.

Tamaryn was opening for the Raveonettes.  The Raveonettes are one of my favorite bands and when I saw them at Coachella they were absolutely fantastic.  They were great here as well, for the little bit of the show I got to see.  I was only able to stay for a couple song because I had to go pickup my brother from the airport.  From what I saw though, the show was stellar.  I highly recommend seeing them if you get a chance.
